New York attracts people from all over. Get on a subway in New York and look at the newspapers that people around you are reading. One person is reading a newspaper in Spanish, another in Chinese, yet others in Yiddish, Arabic, Russian, Italian and French. New York was always a city of immigrants. It still is.
There are five boroughs in New York - Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. Brooklyn alone has so many people that if it were a separate city, it would be the fourth largest in the United States.
Manhattan Geography
Manhattan is an island just 13 miles long and 2 miles wide. It is the centre of American finance, advertising, art theatre, publishing, fashion - and much more. The borough of Manhattan is what most people think of New York, one of the most exciting cities in the world.
Manhattan is divided into the East Side and the West Side. The dividing line is Fifth Avenue. So, for example, East 47th Street begins at Fifth Avenue, as does West 47th Street.
Manhattan is also divided, with less exactness, into Lower (Downtown), Midtown and Upper (Up-town) Manhattan. As you go North, or uptown, the street numbers get higher. Lower Manhattan refers to street numbers below 14th Street and Central Park, and Upper Manhattan to the renaming, northern, part of the island.
The Financial District
The Dutch were the first Europeans to settle Manhattan. To protect themselves from attacks, they built a sturdy wooden wall. Although it's now long gone, this wall gave its name to a street in Lower Manhattan and the street, in turn, became synonymous with American capitalism. The street, of course, is Wall Street. The New York Stock Exchange and the American Stock Exchange are both in the Wall Street area. So are many stock brokers, investment blanks and others bank, and headquarters of many large corporations.
To escape the commotion of Wall Street you can visit the nearby South Street Seaport, an open area of low buildings on the East River. In addition to many shops and restaurants, the seaport has a museum.
Two good ways to get the larger picture of New York are to circle it in a bout and to hover over it in helicopter. In the financial district, though, there's another way to see New York. The twin towers of the World Trade Centre rise 1,350 feet above the city. There's an observation deck on the 107th floor of one of the towers.
Appropriately, the very first business deal in Manhattan was made in what became the financial district. As every American schoolchild knows, the Dutch bought Manhattan from the Indians, for the ridiculously low price of 24 dollars worth of beads and trinkets. There is, however, another, less known side of this: evidently, the Indians who had sold Manhattan did not themselves live there or in any sense own it. The Dutch and the Indians alike walked away pleased.
The Lower East Side
The lower East Side was original an elegant neighborhood. When New York was the capital of the United States, President George Washington lived on the Lower East Side.
By the mid-1880s the Lower East Side had changed greatly. It was characterized by crime and the poverty and hopes of it's residents. By the mid-1800s, the Lower East Side had become an area in which immigrants settled. First, there were many Irish, and then came many Jews from Eastern Europe.
Near the Lower East Side, there are two other neighborhoods that also attracted immigrants and that are famous for their food. The Italian restaurants of Little Italy remain popular to tourists and Italians alike. Today Chinatown is the only immigrant community that's still growing. Chinatown has seven newspaper of its own. It also nearly 200 restaurants.
Greenwich Village and the East Village
Greenwich Village and the East Village have always been at the centre of New York's excitement. Both have been places for people with different and creative ideas. Both have an active nightlife with plenty of bars, restaurants and clubs.
In the early 1900s, the charm Greenwich Village attracted bohemians - writers and artists. By the 1920s, the streets of the Village were filled with other people, curious to see how these odd Villagers lived. The artists and writers began moving out, some to the East Village. Today, the Village has many elements: students attending New York University; an active jazz scene; and in Washington Square - it's centre - street performers, police. Drug dealers, joggers, roller skates, and just about everyone else.
When bohemians moved to the East Village 1920s, they found an area similar to the Lower East Side. There were many immigrants, much dirt and grime. The East Village has changed very little. Over the years it has been a centre for many movements - for the beat poets of the 1950s, the hippies of the 1960s, and, more recently, for New York's punk scene.

My name is Dan. I'm thirteen. I would like to tell about my future vacation.
It’s May right now and I’m looking forward to the longest vacation this year. Now the sun is up so high and bright it makes me want to put aside all the books and play with my friends outside till the sun goes down. This is what I’m going to do for the first couple of days of my summer.
On weekends my parents, my sister and I will go to summer cottage. I have a lot of friends there and I haven’t seen them for several months. I know that soon we will ride our bikes along the garden road, play tennis in the backyard or football on the grass.
At the end of July I’m going to the camp called «Intellect» that is located not far from our city. I have never been there before but a lot of my friends have and they loved it. They said that there was a wide river next to the camp. If the weather is nice children are allowed to swim there when teachers are looking after us.
I like swimming very much and I hope I will be able to do it at the camp. But even if I can’t I won’t be upset because there is a clear lake near our summer cottage and I can swim there. So if it’s still too cold in June — July I will ask my parents to go sunbathing to the lake when we go to summer cottage after I’m back from the camp.
In August my whole family will go to the seaside for sure. My parents have already booked our trip to Anapa. We go there every year and I’m always very happy with our trip.
That’s the way I imagine my future vacation to be like. Hopefully a lot of adventures await me as well as pleasant surprises and unforgettable meetings with new and old friends.

Я знаю, что совсем скоро мы вместе с ними будем кататься по кривым садовым дорожкам на велосипедах, играть в теннис в моем дворе или в футбол на траве.
В конце июня я поеду в детский лагерь «Интеллект», расположенный недалеко от нашего города. Я еще ни разу не был там, но многие мои друзья были, и им очень понравилось. Они рассказывали, что рядом с лагерем есть широкая речка. Если погода на улице стоит хорошая, то детям разрешают купаться в ней под присмотром воспитателей.
Я очень люблю купаться, и, надеюсь, что мне удастся это сделать в детском лагере. Но даже если и нет — ничего страшного, так как у нас на даче тоже есть небольшое чистое озеро, где можно плавать. Поэтому если в июне — начале июля будет еще слишком холодно, то, вернувшись со смены, я обязательно уговорю родителей во время нашей очередной дачной поездки отправиться на озеро загорать.
А еще в августе мы обязательно всей семьей поедем на море. Родители уже купили нам путевки в Анапу. Мы отдыхаем там каждый год, и всегда я остаюсь доволен нашей поездкой.
Вот так я представляю себе свои будущие каникулы, и мне очень нравится этот план. Надеюсь, в скором времени меня ждет множество ярких приключений, приятных сюрпризов и незабываемых встреч с новыми и старыми друзьями.

My name is Arthur. I’m foureen years old. I’d like to tell you about one Russian city which I like a lot. It’s called Kazan. My father’s older brother lives there.
Kazan is the capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan. It is also one of the most exciting cities I have ever seen. Last year we visited Kazan with our school teachers and classmates.
It was an informative trip, as we saw lots of historic, natural and architectural sights. Our guide was an elderly woman who had a lot to tell. In local language Kazan means “a pot”, which is true as it resembles a hollow or boiler. The city has a favourable geographic position. It is situated near the Volga River which helped to develop trading relations from ancient times.
According to historians the city is one thousand years or even older. In the middle of the 16th century it became the part of the Russian empire and the population constantly grew since then. At the moment Kazan shows population over a million people. It features a well-developed chemical and aviation industry, sports and cultural fields. Perhaps, the most popular sport in the city is football.
Cultural background is also on good level. You can find the Academic Opera, the Museum of Natural History and other culturally interesting establishments there. All the guests of the city are offered to visit the Kremlin, which is a complex of outstanding monuments.
For students Kazan is one of the friendliest cities. It features dozens of educational institutions where you can find the highest level of teaching. It is especially true about the Federal University or Medical University.

My name is Karim. I’m fifteen years old. I’d like to tell you about one Russian city which I like a lot. It’s called Naberezhnye Chelny. My father’s younger sister lives there and once or twice a year we visit him.
The city is comparatively young, although the traces of settlements were found there a long time ago. At the moment there are many attractions worth seeing and visiting.
There aren’t many ancient monuments as most of the architecture is dated by the second half of the 20th century. One of the oldest buildings of the city is The Basilica of Saints Cosmas and Damian. It was built in the 19th century at the expense of local merchants. Apart from that, there are several interesting mosques in the city. The most visited one is called “Tauba” and was built in 1993.
One of the newest buildings and popular tourist attractions is the cylindrical shape 24-storey business center called “2.18” or «skullcap«. It appeared in the early 21st century.
In fact, Naberezhny Chelny is the second largest city in the republic after the city of Kazan.
For those, who love art, there is a large Picture Gallery built in 1980. It is full of fine art as well as folk art. Another frequently visited attraction is The Museum of History and Military Glory of Motor Forces, which was established in 1986. In addition, the city has a very beautiful promenade.
Perhaps, the most interesting monument in the city is the one dedicated to Vladimir Vysotsky. Personally, I respect this singer and songwriter. That’s why we visited the monument on our very first visit.

Пожалуй, наиболее интересный памятник в городе тот, который посвящен Владимиру Высоцкому. Лично я уважаю этого певца и автора песен. Именно поэтому мы посетили этот памятник в нашу самую первую поездку.
