Dear Steven, Thanks for your letter. It is so nice to get news about you and your friends.
It's great that you like rap because I am fond of it. I have a lot of disks with foreign and Russian rappars. However, my friends prefer heavy metal. Tastes differ, you know.
I think rap influenced your starting to play the drum. How long have you studying? Is it difficult? What kind of drum have you got?
Well, I must finish now. It's time to go to bed.
Best wishes,
Mary

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, a peasant woman looked out the window of her cottage to watch the village children play in the snow. She did this often because, although she led a very happy life with her husband, there was still a longing in her heart. The woman and her husband had no children of their own, and their biggest wish was to one day be able to watch their own child play in the snow.
The husband one day suggested to his wife that they should go outside and build a snowman, instead of sitting in the house all day. The wife agreed, but wanted instead to build a girl - a snowmaiden. The couple spent that whole day carefully building and molding a snowmaiden. They inserted two bright blue beads for eyes, and a bright red ribbon for her mouth. Then they stood back to look at their beautiful creation. As they watched they noticed something, it looked as if the snowmaiden was smiling. The couple then realized that she was coming to life. After she smiled her hair curled up and she walked into the house. The peasant couple finally had a daughter of their own!
Snowmaiden grew to be beautiful. Her eyes gleamed bright blue and her flaxen hair hung down to her waist. Snowmaiden was however very pale, with no color in her cheeks or lips, but this did not make her any less beautiful.
As winter melted into spring, and the weather started getting warmer, Snowmaiden started to behave strangely. She no longer wanted to go outside to play with the other children, and she began to hide in the dark places of the house. The husband and wife began to worry about her.
Soon summer came and Snowmaiden was more withdrawn than ever. One day her friends asked her to join them on a trip into the woods to pick berries. Snowmaiden was reluctant to join, but at the persistence of her parents went along. In the woods Snowmaiden was sure to stay in the shade. When nightfall came her friends built a fire, and played games jumping over it. Snowmaiden, however, sat by an icy river. Her friends called to her to join their games, but Snowmaiden did not want to go. But as the night went on Snowmaiden grew very lonely by herself at the river, and decided to join their games. "Jump over the fire!" her friends yelled at her. Snowmaiden took a step, ran towards the fire, jumped, and melted away. The poor peasant couple were once again childless.

Only you | Только ты | |
Only you When I really got nothing to do
Can't be true
Only you
When I looking for somebody new
You're the clue
Only change my mind
When I feel so blind
Then you make me see
Love is free
Only you
When I look at your eyes in the blue
Love me too
Only you
When your teardrops are lit by the moon
Laugh too soon
Only change my mind
When I feel so blind
Then you make me see
Love is free
Don't push me aside
(My love's alive)
Don't leave me to die
(You will survive)
You hold me so tight
(Turn off the light)
It all seems so right
Only you
When I really got nothing to do
Can't be true
Only you
When I look at your eyes in the blue
Love me too
Only change my mind
When I feel so blind
Then you make me see
Love is free

Dear Kate,
Thanks for your letter. It was great to hear from you!
In your letter you write about your problem. It's really difficult to take care of little children. You must be patient and kind. As you know, I've got a 3-year-old brother, so I spend a lot of time with him. I must say I find it very difficult. He's very active and naughty. As for me, I wouldn't like to be a baby-sitter because it's a very complicated job. What's more, you're responsible for the baby you look after.
As for your visit to the library, what books did you want to take? Why did you need them? How often do you go to the library?
Sorry, I have to finish my report. Keep in touch!
With love,
William

| Сказка Salem and the Nail - Салем и гвоздь |
Сказка Salem and the Nail - Салем и гвоздьOnce upon the time… the shop belonging to an astute merchant called Salem , and all carpets in it, were burnt in a fire. Salem was left with nothing but his house, and since he was a trader hi decided to sell it. With the money he would be able to buy a new shop and more carpets. Salem did not ask a high price for his house. However, he had a most unusual request to make of would-be buyers:
‘I'll sell you the house, except for that nail in the wall. That remains mine!' And as they all went off, shaking their heads, they wondered what he meant by this strange remark. Abraham, however, more miserly than all the others, thought the price was fair, and he even haggled it down further. A bargain was struck and the new owner took over the whole house, except the nail. A week later, Salem knocked at the door.
‘I've come to hang something on my nail', he said.
Abraham let him in and Salem hung up a large empty bag, said goodbye and left. A few days later, he appeared again, and this time hung an old cloak on the nail. From then on, Salem 's visits became regular; he was forever coming and going, taking things off the nail or hanging something else up.
One evening, in front of the stunned eyes of Abraham and his family, Salem arrived dragging a dead donkey. With a struggle, he hoisted it up and roped it to the nail. The occupants of the house complained about the smell and the sight of the dead beast, but Salem calmly said, ‘It's my nail and I can hang anything I like on it!'
Abraham, naturally, could no longer live in the house under such conditions. But Salem refused to remove the donkey.
‘If you don't like it', he said, ‘you can get out of my house, but I'll not pay you back a penny!'
Abraham did his persuade Salem to take the donkey down, for it smelt to high heaven. He even consulted a judge, but the terms of the bargain were clear. The house belonged to Abraham, but Salem kept the nail.
In the end, Abraham was forced to leave, and Salem got his house back without paying a penny for it!

A young Englishman wanted to go to New York. He had little money about him. He booked a ticket and decided to do without meals. On the first day he walked along the deck, looked at the sea and enjoyed his voyage.
When the companions went to the restaurant, he stayed on deck saying he was not hungry. On the second day he did not go to the restaurant either. On the third day the young man got so hungry that he said to himself: "I'm going to eat even if they throw me overboard." He ate and drank everything with great appetite. When he finished with his dessert, he said bravely to the waiter:
"How much do I owe you?" Great was his surprise when the waiter answered: "Nothing, sir. On the ship meals are included in the cost of your ticket." That was the last day of the mans sea voyage.

November rain |
When I look into your eyes
I can see a love restrained
But darlin' when I hold you
Don't you know I feel the same
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
And we both know hearts can change
And it's hard to hold a candle
In the cold November rain
We've been through this
such a long long time
Just tryin' to kill the pain
But lovers always come
and lovers always go
An no one's really sure
who's lettin' go today
Walking away
If we could take the time
to lay it on the line
I could rest my head
Just knowin' that you were mine
All mine
So if you want to love me
then darlin' don't refrain
Or I'll just end up walkin'
In the cold November rain
Do you need some time...
on your own
Do you need some time...
all alone
Everybody needs some time...
on their own
Don't you know
you need some time...all alone
I know it's hard to keep an open heart
When even friends seem out to harm you
But if you could heal a broken heart
Wouldn't time be out to charm you
Sometimes I need some time...
on my own
Sometimes I need some time...
all alone
Everybody needs some time...
on their own
Don't you know you need some time...
all alone
And when your fears subside
And shadows still remain, ohhh yeahhh
I know that you can love me
When there's no one left to blame
So never mind the darkness
We still can find a way
'Cause nothin' lasts forever
Even cold November rain
Don't ya think
that you need somebody
Don't ya think
that you need someone
Everybody needs somebody
You're not the only one
You're not the only one

A farmer had three sons. Two of them were good sons, but the youngest boy was very lazy. He never helped his father and brothers in their work.

One of us | Один из нас |
If God had a name what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with Him in all His glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see if, seeing meant
That you would have to believe in things like heaven
And in Jesus and the saints, and all the prophets?
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
Tryin' to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody calling on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome
And yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
yeah, yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah
What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Tryin' to make his way home?
Like а holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just tryin' to make his way home
Nobody callin' on the phone
'Cept for the Pope maybe in Rome

Once upon a time a poor old peasant was cutting in the forest on a mountain side when he found a spring of cool water. He drank a little water from it, as it was a hot day and he was thirsty. The water was wonderfully refreshing. Then he saw his face in the water and was surprised to find that he had suddenly grown young. The wrinkles had all gone from his face, his eyes were clear, and his head, which a moment ago had been bald, was covered with thick black hair. As he rose to his feet, he felt the strength of a young man in his body. In great joy the peasant ran down the mountain side to tell the news to his wife. When he ran into the little cottage, his wife could not recognize him, so changed was he from the old man he had been in the morning when she saw him last. He told his wife that he was really her husband. When she realized that a wonderful spring had changed her old husband into a young man she began to cry, because she was afraid that such a handsome young man would not love a weak old woman.
"But you must drink this wonderful water too," he cried. "Well both be young: I can easily show you the spring. Go there at once, while I remain to guard the cottage."
An hour passed, two hours, a long time, but the woman did not return.
"What is the matter with her?" he thought.
At last the man went to her. He found the spring, but his wife was not there. He loudly called her name, but he received no answer. Suddenly he heard pitiful yells from under the bush. He looked in the direction of the sound and saw a baby girl, crying bitterly. The poor woman in her eagerness had drunk too much water!

Текст и перевод песни What can I do - Что я могу сделать?
What can I do | Что я могу сделать? |
Every dream that I dream
Seems to float on by
Like a cloud in the wind
Way up in the sky.
Every move that I make
Seems to be the wrong way
Like a cold black night
After a summer's day.
What can I do?
What can I do?
Nothing's the same as it used to be...
Nothing's the same as it used to be...
What can I do?
I used to play my guitar
With a smile on my face,
Now everything's changed
My whole life's rearranged.
From the day I was born
Title jinx was my name,
Though I tried and I tried
That name still remained
What can I do?
What can I do?
Nothing's the same as it used to be...
Nothing's the same as it used to be...
What can I do?
What can I do?
I hear voices all singing
And no one's there,
It's the ghost of my life
Bringing past tense to mind.
Lock and key here ties me
From the freedom and sin.
Oh come let me in
I'll start all over again...
What can I do?
What can I do?
Nothing's the same as it used to be...
What can I do?

A Visit to the Doctor - Визит к доктору |
Once an old gentleman came to consult a doctor.
"What do you complain of?" asked the doctor.
"You see, doctor, my nervous system is in a bad state. I have a heartache, often headache and my sleep isnt good. Sometimes I cannot sleep all night long."
The doctor examined the patient very carefully and said:
"Your treatment will be very simple, in other words it will be a rest-cure. You should go to a quiet place in the village for a month and have an active rest there: get up early, do morning exercises, have breakfast and go for a walk. You should walk much, go to the forest for fresh air, eat much fruit and vegetables and drink milk before going to bed. And you can smoke one cigarette a day."
A month later the gentleman came to see the doctor again.
"How are you?" asked the doctor.
"I am quite well now," answered the patient "Ive done everything that you recommended me, doctor. I strictly followed all your orders. I walked much, ate much fruit and vegetables and drank milk before going to sleep. But one cigarette a day almost killed me."
"But why?" asked the doctor.
"Its not a joke to begin smoking at my age. I had never smoked before." answered the gentleman.

Once Swift went on a journey, accompanied by his servant. They were both on horseback. The journey was long, so when night came, they had to stop at an inn.
In the morning Swift asked for his boots. The servant brought them, but the writer saw that they were as dirty as the night before. "Why haven't you cleaned my boots?" he asked his lazy servant.
"Well, sir, as you are going to ride today, I thought that if I cleaned them, they would soon be dirty again".
"All right, get the horses ready," Swift said, and went to have his breakfast. Then he paid his bill and left the inn. His servant was already in front of the inn with the horses.
"Well, let's go on."
"But, sir, I'm hungry, I haven't had my breakfast yet."

Swift, the author of "Gulliver's Travels", had many friends and he often received presents from them. The presents were generally sent by messengers. Swift liked receiving presents, but he was far from being generous, and he never gave any tips to the messengers.
Once, however, a messenger boy, who had often brought him presents and had never yet got a tip, taught him a lesson.
One day the messenger boy came to Swift's house with a heavy basket full of game, fish and fruit. He knocked at the door and the author opened it himself. The boy gave him the basket and said it was from Mr. Brown. He was just going away when Swift stopped him and said, "Come back, my boy, and learn to be polite. Imagine yourself to be me and I will be you". Then he bowed politely to the messenger boy and said, "Sir, Mr. Brown sends to you a little present of game, fish and fruit, and asks you to do him the honour of accepting it".
"Oh, very well, my boy", replied the young messenger, "Tell Mr. BrownI am much obliged to him, andhere is half a crown for yourself".
